Indexing Rates / Terms and Conditions
Rates usually depend on the
material being indexed: its complexity, density, audience level and turnaround rate.
As word density per page varies greatly between books, fees for indexing are now based on a word count. This is currently £6.00 per thousand words.
A sample of the document (for instance a chapter) would greatly assist me in making a firm quote. Pages to be assessed may be sent as a .pdf file or as a word document attached to an email.
The Society of Indexers guide to indexing fees may be useful. It also describes other issues that are involved in negotiating rates.
My rates for repagination work and bibliographic compilation are based on the length of time the work takes. My basic hourly rate is currently £20 an hour.
Embedded indexing, both MS Word embedding and CUP-XML, does take longer and so my rate will be 12.5% more.
A letter of agreement will cover the index specifications, deadline, fee, payment method and any other related terms and conditions.
Urgent projects/rush jobs: If yours is a rush job thus forcing me to work unsociable hours and/or weekends, this will incur an additional fee.
Proofs: I prefer to work from electronic proofs (.pdf files) as this speeds up my indexing considerably. The PDFs should be unprotected allowing merging of individual chapters.
Name indexes: If a separate index of authors or names is required, this will increase the final fee by the additional time taken to complete the author index.
New clients: I am always happy to accept new clients. However, if a client's payment record has not been established, a proportion of the fee must be paid in advance of the work being started.
Late payment: Payment is normally expected within 30 days of the invoice date. I understand and will exercise my statutory right to claim interest and compensation for debt recovery costs under the late payment legislation if I am not paid according to agreed credit terms.
